As far as I understand:
 
In question 1, I prefer the second sentence.
In question 3, I think that which refer to the part 'the ease with which he treats history as a subject matter comes from his deep understanding of it and his aesthetic tendencies' as a whole.
 
I cannot provide a satisfactory translation to the second question. :)

Could you explain why you prefer the second, if you tell me that it’s your instinct, I will be so confused.

Why you couldn’t provide a satisfactory translation to the second question.? Maybe you mean that you couldn’t give the Chinese translation, then could you give the English translation?
